I will shout into the void until the void responds.

Respond with anything... a fic, a drawing, a graphic... anything TRON-related is fair game. The prompt doesn't have to be incorporated verbatim. Let your creativity flow.

Responses can be posted in the comments below or in a separate post to the comm. Use the tag #prompt responses if making a separate post.

This Week's Rec: The Devil's Dues by DragonWarden

The Devil's Dues is a T-rated apocalypse fic that follows Sam and Tron in the real world after everything collapses. Rinzler still lurks beneath the surface, and the pair get more trouble than they bargained for when they stumble upon a safe haven in San Francisco.

My Review: I enjoyed this fic for a wide variety of reasons. Sam and Tron are well-drawn characters throughout, and the author addresses Tron's adjustments to the real world in believable and amusing ways. The Rinzler/Tron divide is also dealt with elegantly as Tron comes into his own not as a program, but as a human being. The original characters are compelling and fun, and the author's vision of a post-apocalyptic USA is striking. It reminds me more of Fallout than the Mad Max-style world mentioned in the description's prompt, but that's really neither here nor there.

Overall, though, The Devil's Dues is a tense thrill ride that is well-worth checking out.

[community profile] tron_comm now has an affiliate Tumblr, which can be found here!  The plan is to use it to post gifs and graphics made by the fandom on Tumblr, and hopefully expand our reach and increase fandom participation!

On that note: I am making tentative plans for a TRON celebration based around TRON's 35th anniversary in July. I would like to do a fandom bingo, and possibly a countdown to the anniversary with a week of prompts that could be filled on Tumblr or here (possibly with daily discussion posts). I am also entertaining the possibility of streaming the original TRON for comm members, though that remains an amorphous idea of questionable legality.

Here comes the important question: would you participate in these activities if they were organized for the community?

Please, please, PLEASE comment here if you are even remotely interested.

Thank you.

This Week's Rec: Tron: Renewal by DawningStar (link goes to series page)

Tron: Renewal is a series of four fics following the end of TRON: Legacy. The focus is on Tron's recovery following the events of the film as he deals with his guilt over what he did as Rinzler. Two of the fics have a focus on Tron/Yori, and explain what exactly happened to Yori before and during Legacy. While the series is apparently incomplete, the four stories that have been posted nevertheless stand well on their own.

My Review:
Above all I appreciate how well-written these stories are. The prose is compelling and there are no distracting errors. That aside, however, what really drew me to this series was the well-drawn characters. DawningStar has a very good handle on the characters here, namely Tron and Yori. Tron's guilt is explored but not dwelt on excessively, and Yori's story is tragic and her anger at her circumstances believable.

My favorite of these stories is probably "Recovery," which focuses on Yori's sister programs, all of whom helped her to operate the Portal in and out of the Grid. They all have been quarantined to remove the taint of Clu's repurposing of them, and all but one has recovered. Tron finds himself alone with this program, Ayci, and tries (badly) to get through to her. The tension in this story is palpable, as Tron tries again to come to terms with what he did under Clu's thumb and how it changes how these programs react to him.

All in all, Tron: Renewal is a well-written little series, with believable takes on the characters and an interesting take on what might have happened after Legacy's resolution.

Apologies that this is a day late; I got busy yesterday and wasn't able to write this up in time.

This Week's Rec: Triad, by Allronix

Triad is a T-rated fic based in the original TRON, following Flynn as he comes to realize that he may never escape the digital world and return to his own. Tron and Yori offer to be his friends, and more than that.

My Review:
Allronix offers an interesting look at program relationships in this short fic. The opening scene where Flynn has a discussion with the MCP is delightfully creepy, but most of the fic takes place on the Solar Sailer after Flynn reroutes it. Everyone is in character, and it's fascinating to see how Tron and Yori consider romantic relationships, and how Flynn reacts to their offer to join them.

What do I like about this fic? I like how it approaches program relationships as this alien yet familiar thing. I really like the scene between Flynn and the MCP--it shows the full extent of the MCP's plans and just how depraved it is. All in all, it's a delightful little fic. It's also nice to read something based around the 1982 film for a change.

One of the primary functions of this comm is to serve as a place to share your various TRON fanworks. To that end, here is a basic template to use when posting said fanworks:

Title: (title of your work, if it has one)
Author/Artist/Creator: (your username or pseud or name)
Rating: (the rating of your work; you can use either the MPAA ratings system or the one in use on AO3: G, T, M, E)
Characters/Pairings: (which characters or pairings does your work center around?)
Wordcount: (for fanfiction only)
Summary/Prompt: (Optional; a basic summary of your work, or the prompt you used to create it)
Warnings: (REQUIRED; if your work contains triggering or otherwise inappropriate material, please warn for it here)
Author/Artist/Creator’s Notes: (any notes you want to share about your work)

Copy and Paste version for your convenience:

This template can also be found on our profile page.

PLEASE REMEMBER:
Works rated above R/M cannot be posted directly to the comm! Doing so will get your post deleted and a warning marked against your account! Such works must be linked to, either directly to your journal or off-site elsewhere. Thank you in advance.

July 9, 2017 marks the 35th anniversary of TRON, the film that started it all for our little fandom. I realize it's a couple of months off yet, and that our community is still small, but I thought we might celebrate with some activities or contests or something.

My ideas:
- Fandom bingo! Sign-ups would run the first week in June. Prompts could be filled with fanfic, art, graphics, icons, crafts, fanmixes--anything! Bingo responses would be posted starting July 9 through either the 15th or the 31st.
-Livestream of TRON: this is a very tentative idea, mostly because 1) I have no idea how I might host this; and 2) it is of very questionable legality, and while I love Disney, I also fear them. And their lawyers. Mostly their lawyers.

I realize this is only a couple of ideas, but that is why I turn to you, fair members! Do you have an idea for our anniversary celebration? Share it in the comments! Would you be interested in either of the ideas I've presented here? Let me know in the comments! Think this is a dumb idea and we shouldn't do anything? SAY SO IN THE COMMENTS.

Here's to what will hopefully be the first of many weekly fanfiction recommendations!

This Week's Rec: whoami and We Are Pilots by [personal profile] shirozora (link goes to series index on AO3)

whoami is a prelude to We Are Pilots, following Tron after he washes up on the shore of the Sea of Simulation.

We Are Pilots follows on almost directly from that. The AO3 summary:
Six months and Sam still can't shake off his father's ghost, so Quorra suggests returning to the Grid to find the answers he needs to move on. With her monitoring from the outside, Sam goes in not knowing what he'll find or if he'll succeed. What he discovers is a dying Grid that needs his help to rebuild… and Tron, who needs to become himself again.

We Are Pilots is a Sam/Tron fic. The rating is definitely a strong T/PG-13, but the romance never moves into more explicit territory. There is some violence as well.

My Review: I read this story-verse back when it was first posted, in 2010/2011. We Are Pilots has since been revised, and it shines through magnificently. There is an incredible amount of worldbuilding: shirozora speculates on what would happen to a Clu- and Creator-less Grid, and the result is a faction-filled, almost post-apocalyptic Tron City that is crumbling in the wake of the reintegration. There is a lot of character development for Sam, too, who comes to the Grid looking for the key to all of his father's plans and nothing more, but soon realizes that the Grid needs him.

At the heart of the story, however, is the relationship that develops between Sam and Tron. It builds slowly before turning to romance, founding itself on a basic trust between the two. I like the interpretation of Sam as demisexual or gray-ace, and the differences (and some similarities) between how Users and programs express their sexuality. I also loved that as Sam and Tron get physically involved, they nevertheless take the time to make sure of what the other is okay with.

While whoami is a bit more unpolished, We Are Pilots shines with excellent worldbuilding, fulfilling character development, and a well-written and well-considered relationship at its center.
